Power and Capacity of the Sunmile SM-G73

The Sunmile SM-G73has 600W rated power and 1000w locked power. It is advertised to have 1.6 HP. I am not sure how the HP is calculated. I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t have a 1.6 HP motor as you start getting into commercial grinders when you have anything over 1HP. If we were to go by rated horsepower which you get by dividing the max watts which is 1000 by 746, you would get 1.34 rated HP.

However the manufacturer calculates the horsepower of the grinder, it is powerful enough to grind deer, beef, pork and any other meat you can think of. According to manufacturer’s spec, the G73 can grind up to 185 lbs of meat an hour. For optimal grinding, you should cut the meat into small pieces, about 1 – 1.5 inch cubes and put it in the freezer until it is firm but not frozen.

switches and breakerUsers have reported being able to grind 60-100 lbs per session without overheating. You can use it for 20 minutes and then need to give it a 10-15 minute break before starting up again.  This keeps the motor from overheating.  The grinder also has a circuit breaker as a safety measure to prevent the motor from burning out.

And just because it is a meat grinder doesn’t mean you’re limited to just grinding meat. It grinds nuts wonderfully if you need to grind large quantity of nuts.

Here is a video of a Sunmile meat grinder. It is a less powerful model (SM-G33), but it will give you an idea of how a Sunmile grinder is assembled and how fast it can grind.

Grinder Head, Grinder Plates and Cutting Blade

spiral grinder headThis grinder is a #8 grinder and the diameter of a standard #8 grinder measures 2 1/2 inches . The inside of the grinder head has a spiral design that is suppose to help grind meat more efficiently. The diameter of the feeding tube is not listed anywhere. Since this is a #8 grinder, the feeding tube is most likely no more than 2 inches wide. If you look at the grinder, the feeding tube gets narrower as it goes down to where the meat drops into the auger.

sunmile sm-g73 grinder plate & bladeThe Sunmile comes with 1 cutting blade and 3 grinding plates. The manufacturer doesn’t specify the size of the grinding plates but a customer did a rough measurement of the diameter of the holes on the grinder plates. The size of the diameter on each of the grinder plates comes out to 2 mm for the smallest plate, 4mm for the medium size grinder plate and 7 mm for the coarse one. Converting those them from millimeters to inches, the finest grind is 3/32 inch, the medium grinder plate is 5/32 inch and the coarse plate is about 1/4 to 5/16 inches.

Parts Material

Although the Sunmile meat grinder is advertised to be stainless steel , the housing is actually made from aluminum with stainless steel wrapping. The meat tray and feeding tube are made from aluminum, while the cutting blade and grinder plates are made of steel.

The internal gears are made from plastic, instead of metal, which is common for grinders in this price range.

The food pusher, sausage attachments and Kubbe attachment are all made of plastic.

Controls

sunmile sm-g73 buttonsThe Sunmile SM-G73 has 3 very large buttons that operate the grinder. It has an On/Off button, a Reverse button and a Reset button. The reverse button is a desirable feature to have in case the grinder jams and you need to unclog the grinder. The reset button is used to reset the grinder in case the circuit breaker needs to be used.

Assembling Your Grinder

If you watched the video above, you can see how simple it is to assemble your grinder. Just remember that the sharp edge of the cutting blade faces out and is placed against the grinding plates.

Taking Care of Your Sunmile SM-G73 Grinder

The parts and accessories of the Sunmile G73 are made of steel and aluminum so they are prone to rusting. They are not dishwasher safe and should be hand wash only, then dried immediately so they don’t rust or discolor. You should also oil your grinder parts and accessories with food grade oil before you put it away. Since you are grinding raw meat to eat, you want to keep all parts and accessories of the grinder free from rust.

Consumer Ratings For the Sunmile SM-G73

For the most part, the Sunmile SM-G73 has favorable reviews. The reviews fall into two categories. Either the users really liked their grinder, saying that the grinder works wonderfully and they got an excellent value. Or they got a defective grinder and it just didn’t work at all because the motor failed and they found plastic pieces shredded to bits inside. Of the 70 reviews to date on Amazon, 9 reviews had motor problems, which is roughly 13%. Of course this is by no means a scientific calculation, but it gives us something to go by.

No product has a 100% non-defective rate, but 13% is quite high in my opinion. Fortunately, you get a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer and most of the buyers were able to get a refund. Also, if you buy from Amazon, you can count on Amazon’s great return policy as well.

Price

The Sunmile SM-G73 grinder is a good value for the money. It is easy to use, cleans up fast and is powerful. Sure, it doesn’t have metal gears and isn’t stainless steel, but that’s why it costs less than $100. You’ll have to decide if the low price for the grinder is worth the hassle of having to return one that doesn’t work. Although I wouldn’t give the Sunmile G73 grinder a strong buy recommendation for that reason, it is quite a good grinder for the price. If you don’t think you will be using a meat grinder all that frequently or just don’t have the budget for a more expensive grinder, but want a meat grinder with a lot of grinding power, then the Sunmile SM-G73 will suit your needs.
