Grinding Power of the Weston #22
The Weston #22 (model 08-2201-W) is a 750 watt meat grinder with an actual 1 HP motor. That is a lot of grinding power! The motor is permanently lubricated, which means you don’t have to worry about having to oil it or having the motor seize up. The gears are made of metal and they are all well oiled so the grinder operates smoothly and quietly. For such a powerful and heavy duty machine, users noted that the grinder is relatively quiet. It’s not whisper quiet by any means, but for a meat grinder it is not obnoxiously loud. The grinder is air cooled and equipped with a circuit breaker for safety. The grinder also has rubber feet for stability. The rubber will absorb the vibration and keep the grinder from moving around.
The Weston commercial grinder is UL approved. Underwriters Laboratories has been around for over 100 years and sets the standards for product safety as well as tests and certifies them.
In addition to being UL approved, the Weston grinder is also NSF/ANSI Standard 8 approved. Because the Weston grinder is considered a commercial grinder, it is used in restaurants and meat processing businesses. The NSF is an independent organization that tests the product to make sure that that the product is safe and that the material used is safe (i.e. the material used doesn’t leech chemicals into your food). And NSF regularly conducts on-site inspections and re-test the products. More information can be found at NSF website.
A reviewer commented that he or she uses the Weston #22 grinder in their deer processing shop every day for several hours a day and it is still going strong 2 years later. That shows you just how well made this grinder is.
Weston #22 Meat Grinder Capacity and Efficiency
The Weston model 08-2201-W grinder can grind up to 725 pounds of meat an hour and about 9-12 pounds of meat a minute. You can grind up a whole cow in less than an hour! You’re definitely not getting this grinder to grind 10-20 pounds of meat. I mean you technically can, but it’s probably overkill. The grinder can grind deer, elk, moose and other fibrous game meat without a problem. Other items that have also been grinded are fish and carrots.
If you are wondering about whether or not this grinder can grind bones, users have reported being able to grind chicken bones, rabbit bones, turkey necks, and pork ribs. A lot of pet owners need a grinder that can grind a lot of meat including bones for their pet’s raw food or BARF diet. This grinder can definitely handle bones. However, be advised that the manufacturer states in the manual that grinding anything hard like bones and nuts will void the warranty. Because bones are hard on the motor, most manufacturers will not warranty a grinder to grind bones. So while the grinder is able to grind bones, and many users buy it for that purpose, just be aware that doing so will void the warranty.
Here is a video that shows how fast the Weston #22 can grind up meat:
Feeding Tube and Grinder Size
As the name implies, the Weston # 22 is a size 22 grinder. The grinder head measures 3 1/4”.
The feeding chute is 3 inches wide without the meat tray attached and 2.85” with the meat tray attached. When you are grinding a lot of meat at a time, there’s bound to be a lot of prep work involved. A big and powerful grinder not only grinds your meat faster, but because it has a larger feed chute, you don’t have spend a lot of time to cut the meat as small to fit down the feeding tube. It’s a time saver in both preparation and grinding time.
Since the Weston commercial grinder has a feeding tube with a wide opening, the meat tray also comes with a safety guard. You should never operate the grinder without the safety guard. It’s big enough for some people to fit their hands down the feeding chute and you might be tempted to push the meat down with your hands instead of the stomper, which can cause serious injuries.
Grinding Plates and Cutting Blades
The Weston grinder comes with 1 cutting blade and 2 grinder plates. There’s a coarse grinding plate with holes measuring 3/10” (7mm) and a medium grinding plate with holes measuring 1/5” (4.5mm). I’m of the opinion that you should get one cutting blade for each grinder plate. Other plate sizes are also available for the #22 grinder if you need more.
What are the parts on the Weston Grinder made of?
The housing, meat tray, grinder head, auger, grinder plates and cutting knives are all made of stainless steel, which is the holy grail of kitchen equipment.
The internal gear is all metal so you can be sure that the grinder will last a long time.
The stuffing tubes, high speed auger, and flange are made of plastic. And the snack stick tube is made of plastic and stainless steel.
The Weston #22 grinder has an On/Off switch as well as a reverse switch. Only the #22 and #32 Weston commercial grinders come with the reverse. The #8 and #12 grinders do not have a reverse function.
Cleaning Your Weston #22 Meat Grinder
All the parts and accessories on the Weston #22 are stainless steel or plastic so you can put them in the dishwasher after you are done grinding. One of the biggest complaints that most people have with meat grinders is the inability to clean the accessories in the dishwasher. That’s because most of them are made of steel and aluminum. But, that’s not a problem you’re going to have! Not only will you be able to grind more meat faster, but your clean up time will be shorter as well.
Sausage Making Accessories
The Weston commercial grinder comes with 3 plastic tapered sausage stuffing tubes that are 7 inches long. The sizes of the sausage tubes are 7/8” (20mm) for the small tube, 1 1/8” (30mm) for the medium tube, and 1 ½” (40mm) for the large tube. It also comes with a flange and a stuffing star so that you don’t regrind the meat again when making your sausages.
In addition to the 3 sausage stuffing tubes, you also get the Cyclone high speed stuffing auger and a stainless steel snack stick tube. The plastic high speed auger is only used with the snack stick stuffing tube. Snack sticks are pretty hard to make because the tubes that you use to make them are small so it’s hard to push the meat through. With the high speed auger, it forces the meat through the tubes into the casing so you can your own snack sticks at home. No need to buy any more Slim Jims.

This grinder has only 4-5 stars rating. Everyone who bought the grinder is extremely happy with how fast it can grind and how powerful it is. “Workhorse, superb, first class” are all words that are used to describe the Weston grinder. Read more reviews here.
The only regret anyone had was that they didn’t get the grinder a long time ago to save themselves from wasting money on inferior grinders.
The Weston #22 meat grinder cost quite a bit more than other grinders. But, it is a commercial grinder and constructed of stainless steel, not aluminum and carbon steel.
